IX Liverpool Launch UK’s First Internet Exchange for the Internet of Things

After some R&D “sea” trials, we are pleased to announce that we now have a separate peering LAN for the Internet of Things(

Liverpool has a rich mix of IoT hackers, makers and businesses (I have two IoT businesses) and as IoT becomes more and more mainstream (with the likes of Liverpool’s smart city agenda, Sensor City from John Moores University) and some of the ace stuff coming out of Does Liverpool, we think it is about time to start looking at the infrastructure behind these devices, as without reliable connectivity, their intended application will fail.

Internet of Things devices generally produce small amounts of data but need fast, low latency and fast access and with minimal hops in order to get the message from A to B, so it makes sense to exchange the data between devices in……errm well…Liverpool.!.(whereas normally it would likely go to London and back even if the device is in the same room as you).

So to kick things off, we are creating 24 x 100MB ports on a totally separate LAN segment inside the exchange…and from our research, we think we’ve just created the UK’s first Internet Exchange for the Internet of Things..! let’s hope it takes off!

From a technical point of view, its totally separate from our main exchange LAN (not interconnected) and we are using IPV6 exclusively, and because IoT devices have different MTU requirements, we are experimenting with customisable MTU values for customers, starting at 1280 bytes.

…And…just when you may ask, how will people outside of Liverpool get to peer on the LAN?, from next month, we will be allowing members to install their own leased circuits into the exchange, meaning they can use remote peering directly into the exchange from anywhere in the world…(members might stick in a 100MB leased line from London to Liverpool for example)
