About the Exchange

IX Liverpool

Connecting Liverpool to the World

IX Liverpool (aka Liverpool Internet Exchange) is a “not for profit” Layer 2 Internet Exchange Point (IXP) based in the Liverpool City Region (LCR).

Founded in 2016 in order to facilitate public peering in the North West of the UK, Our job is to provide exclusive connectivity between members by connecting them together at key geographical locations throughout the LCR ( Liverpool, Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens, Halton & the Wirral).

Our membership includes ISPs, network operators and content providers with their own data networks.

IX Liverpool is a mutual non-profit company, as such, it can give members the best prices as there are no shareholders to please.

Our Network of Internet Exchanges

Since 2016, IX Liverpool has partnered with local data centre operators to host our network of digital connectivity hubs so that members can connect and peer with each other.

In 2024, we partnered with Liverpool City Region Data Centres (LCRDC) to host some of our hubs, while our original 2017 partnership with MICT still remains today. In addition to the data centres, we’ve also connected all of our nodes together using Layer2 so members can use the exchange fabric at various locations.

IX Liverpool is currently available in the following Data Centres:

LCRDC Sandhills Substation : The site of IX Liverpool’s own data centre for members to host equipment and connect to the exchange & also the site of LCRDC’s 18,000sqft Sandhills Substation data centre.

MICT Data Centre: a data centre in the Baltic Triangle area of Liverpool which has been operating one of IX Liverpool’s nodes since 2017.

LCRDC Knowsley : an edge data centre in Knowsley that hosts the first open and neutral Internet Exchange that serves the whole of the Knowsley area.

LCRDC Hornby : an edge data centre in Bootle that hosts Sefton’s first open and neutral Internet Exchange that serves the whole area.

LCRDC Wallasey Water Tower : an edge data centre on the Wirral Peninsula that hosts Cheshire’s first open and neutral Internet Exchange that serves the whole area.

IX Liverpool also has other sites planned for St Helens in 2027 and Halton in 2026 with other data centre operators once those agreements have concluded.

The map below shows the current status of IX Liverpool’s digital connectivity hubs.  If you would like to take space in any of the data centres below, please contact each data centre operator to obtain quotes.
